【物化性质】黄红色液体，有窒息性、刺激性恶臭。在空气中强烈发烟。相对密度1.678，熔点-80℃，沸点135.6℃，闪点118℃，引燃温度234℃，折射率1.570，饱和蒸气压1.33kPa (19℃)，相对蒸气密度4.7。溶于乙醇、苯、醚、二硫化碳、四氯化碳，是硫、碘、金属氯化物、有机化合物的优良溶剂，遇水或潮气发生反应，分解为硫、二氧化硫和氯化氢而发烟，散发出刺激性和腐蚀性的氯化氢气体。在室温下十分稳定，但在100℃时分解为硫和氯，在300℃时则完全分解。能被金属还原生成氯化物和硫化物，用氯气饱和可生成二氯化硫等。能与金属氧化物或金属硫化物反应生成金属氯化物。在室温下的干燥一氯化硫对铜和铁均无腐蚀性，遇潮时对大多数金属有强腐蚀性。

用于橡胶的低温硫化剂和黏结剂。不饱和脂肪酸经一氯化硫处理，可用作耐压润滑剂；棉籽油、豆油、菜籽油等植物油经一氯化硫处理，可制成一种白色硫化油胶（白刹婆、白油胶）和琥珀色硫化油胶（黑刹婆、黑油胶），用于橡胶工业。还用于石油添加剂，染料工业和有机合成用作氯化剂或硫化剂。化纤工业用于制造织物的整理剂。用于制造杀虫剂。冶金工业用作金、银等贵稀金属的萃取剂。木材工业用作软木硬化剂，国防工业用作军用毒气。

【制法】合成法：先将硫黄粉投入夹套反应器内，然后通入蒸汽加热，同时通入少量氯气，经反应Ih后停止加热，并加大通氯量，维持在50～60℃反应16～20h，经过滤，于130.141℃进行蒸馏，测定料液的相对密度和沸程的一氯化硫含量合格后，制得一氯化硫成品。其反应式如下：

[Physical and chemical properties] Yellow red liquid, with asphyxiant and irritating odor. Smoke strongly in the air. The relative density is 1.678, the melting point is - 80 ℃, the boiling point is 135.6 ℃, the flash point is 118 ℃, the ignition temperature is 234 ℃, the refractive index is 1.570, the saturated vapor pressure is 1.33kPa (19 ℃), and the relative vapor density is 4.7. Soluble in ethanol, benzene, ether, carbon disulfide and carbon tetrachloride, it is an excellent solvent for sulfur, iodine, metal chlorides and organic compounds. It reacts with water or moisture, decomposes into sulfur, sulfur dioxide and hydrogen chloride and emits smoke, giving off irritating and corrosive hydrogen chloride gas. It is very stable at room temperature, but decomposes into sulfur and chlorine at 100 ℃, and completely decomposes at 300 ℃. It can be reduced by metals to generate chlorides and sulfides, and saturated with chlorine to generate sulfur dichloride, etc. It can react with metal oxides or metal sulfides to generate metal chlorides. Dry sulfur monochloride at room temperature is non corrosive to copper and iron, and strongly corrosive to most metals in case of moisture.

It is also used in petroleum additives, dye industry and organic synthesis as chlorinating agent or vulcanizing agent. A finishing agent used in the chemical fiber industry to make fabrics.
