DIBP为常用主增塑剂之一。可作为纤维素树脂、乙烯基树脂、丁睛橡胶和氯化橡胶等的增塑剂。增塑效能与DBP类似，具有优良有溶解性、分散性和粘着性。 本品与颜料的可上相溶性好，可用于着色薄膜，人造革和塑料制品，本品还可作为天然橡胶和合成橡胶的软化剂，可提高制品的回弹性。可做DBP的替代品使用。
与乙酸纤维素、乙酸丁酸纤维素、硝酸纤维素、乙基纤维素、聚氯乙烯、聚醋酸乙烯酯、聚乙烯醇缩丁醛、聚苯乙烯等树脂相容。在水中的溶解度0.05g/L（25℃）。
