二氯化二硫是一种黄红色液体，有刺激性、窒息性恶臭，在空气中强烈发烟。遇水分解为硫、二氧化硫、氯化氢。熔点－80℃，沸点135.6℃，密度1.678克/厘米3；加热300℃以上时分解为硫和氯。它易水解：

2S2Cl2+2H2O─→SO2+4HCl+3S

将干燥的氯气通入熔化的硫，主要生成二氯化二硫。二氯化二硫可做硫、碘和某些有机化合物及金属化合物的溶剂，也可做橡胶硫化剂。
